I would advice you to play all vanilla games anyway before any mod to get the full story about Strelok, Scar and the other characters.

Stalkersoup and lost Alpha are great too. Misery, Dead Air and RTTN are the most difficult mods (also the most interesting). CoC is great if you're looking for an experience close to the vanilla games with a lot of mods available, there is also a blend of Misery and CoC called Call of Misery. I think i have tried them all, i mainly played Anomaly, Dead Air and RTTN. The main point about Anomaly is the 圆4 engine which makes it gorgeous toward other mods. However Dead Air is hardcore and should be played by stalker's veterans who are looking for difficulty, but it's much different than Anomaly. My main complain about Anomaly is that it's too easy (when you know all maps and vanilla games) I didn't found Anomaly harder than vanilla games personally, even Jupiter underground seemed easier than vanilla CoP.
